YILDIZ TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY LIBRARY: HISTORY AND GENERAL INFORMATION

The Yıldız Technical University Library operated from two separate locations between 2011 and February 2024:

  • Yıldız Campus Şevket Sabancı Branch Library

  • Martyr Prof. Dr. İlhan VARANK Library

With the opening of the Davutpaşa Central Library in 2024;

  • Davutpaşa Campus Central Library

  • Martyr Prof. Dr. İlhan VARANK Library (Reading Room)

  • Yıldız Campus Şevket Sabancı Branch Library

will provide services in three separate buildings across two campuses.

While the Martyr Prof. Dr. İlhan VARANK Library serves exclusively as a reading room,
the Davutpaşa Central Library and the Yıldız Campus Şevket Sabancı Branch Library primarily house publications related to the subject areas of the academic units on their respective campuses.

The primary user group of our library is the university community. However, master’s and doctoral students, faculty members, and researchers from other higher education institutions may also use the library under certain rules (they cannot borrow books).
Our Davutpaşa Central Library, which serves a large user base, is open 24/7.

The Yıldız Technical University Library provides services to acquire, organize, and make available scientific and current publications for research and educational purposes, in accordance with the needs of the institution it serves and its user base, while offering the most conducive environment for their use.

YTÜ DAVUTPAŞA CENTRAL LIBRARY

On February 29, 2024, our new library building—spanning approximately 10,000 m² and with a capacity of 1,400 users—opened its doors on the Davutpaşa Campus.

The vision of the Yıldız Technical University Library is:

  • To ensure continuous information sharing among knowledge, intellectual and artistic works, and scientific platforms,

  • and to serve as a resource for all academic research nationwide.

Equipped with modern, smart building features, our library:

  • Supports the achievement of educational goals,

  • and provides uninterrupted service to meet the information needs of scientific research in a fast and convenient manner.

Our entire book collection (Blocks A–C) is organized using the open-shelf system and the Library of Congress (LC) Classification System. Books and other inventory items are tracked using an RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) system.

Our rich collection of print and electronic materials is continuously updated in line with the university’s educational policies. We strive for continuous improvement to ensure our users derive maximum benefit from the collection.

DAVUTPAŞA CAMPUS MARTYR PROF. DR. İLHAN VARANK LIBRARY (READING ROOMS)

The library opened in May 2011 to meet the growing need for library services resulting from the expansion of the Davutpaşa campus.

In 2017, the library was named in honor of Prof. Dr. İlhan Varank, who was martyred on July 15, 2016.

When the new Central Library opened in February 2024, the entire print collection was moved there, and the Varank Library continues to serve solely as a reading room.

YILDIZ CAMPUS ŞEVKET SABANCI BRANCH LIBRARY

The history of librarianship at Yıldız Technical University began in 1937 with its reclassification as a “Technical School” under the Ministry of National Education; the library was established that same year by Technician Ulvi Yürüten.

The academic library opened following the construction of the new academic building during the 1959–60 academic year.

At the Şevket Sabancı Central Library, publications are organized according to the Library of Congress (LC) Classification System using an open-shelf system.

In 1986, library operations became computer-assisted, and in 2003, the library transitioned to automation with the Yordam 2001 OPAC system.
