LOAN AND RETURN POLICY
LOAN AND RETURN POLICIES
Y.T.Ü. faculty, students, and administrative staff may use the Y.T.Ü. Library without becoming members; however, they must become members to borrow publications.
When users wish to borrow books, they must present their university ID cards to the librarian. Library ID cards may not be used by anyone other than the cardholder. If a card is found to be used by someone else or has been tampered with, it will be blocked for one month.
Contract and external staff working at Y.T.Ü. must apply to the Library and Documentation Directorate with a letter from their department specifying their position and term of employment in order to use the lending services.
Student ID cards and academic/administrative staff cards remain valid until the holder’s affiliation with Y.T.Ü. is terminated.
LOAN PERIODS AND MATERIAL LIMITS BY STATUS | |||
STATUS | LOAN PERIOD LIMIT | MATERIAL LIMIT | RENEWAL ELIGIBILITY |
Academic Staff | 60 | 15 | 2 |
Doctorate / Master’s | 30 | 10 | 2 |
Bachelor's / Associate's Degree | 21 | 5 | 1 |
Administrative staff | 30 | 3 | 1 |
The return date can be viewed by the user who processed the transaction on the self-check screen. (The user may request a receipt or email.)
The loan period for borrowed materials can be extended as long as the item has not been reserved by someone else. The return date for a material can be extended by no more than the maximum allowed by the user’s status.
Extensions of the return date cannot be processed by phone or email.
The library reserves the right to recall an item without waiting for the due date if it deems it necessary. Once the recall notice is received, the member must return the item to the library within 3 days at the latest.
Standard lending rules apply to all books in the library’s collection. Standard and/or non-standard requests will not be accepted.
Books will not be loaned to members who have outstanding fines or overdue items, and loan periods will not be extended for such members.
If books brought in for return are left on a shelf or in another section outside the circulation desk, the book’s record will not be removed from the reader’s account, and the reader remains responsible for the book.
The book renewal process is carried out as follows:
a) By visiting the circulation desk
b) By logging in via the library website (*)
(*) When logging in, faculty or administrative staff must enter their employee ID number as the User Code, while students must enter their student ID number. The password is set by the user or a temporary password is provided by the library. By entering their password to log in, the user can renew loan periods, change their password, and place holds.
Responsibilities of the Borrower
Once borrowed, the user is fully responsible for the material until it is returned to the library.
It is not the library’s responsibility to remind users of the due date. It is the user’s responsibility to return borrowed materials on time.
The user is responsible for any loss or damage to the material.
Since notifications, due date reminders, and reservation reminders are sent via text message and email, users must provide the library with their valid cell phone numbers and email addresses. However, it is the member’s responsibility to track the due dates of information resources borrowed from the library. The library is not responsible for SMS messages or emails that do not reach the user.
Failure of the overdue fine notice to reach the user for any reason does not constitute a valid excuse for non-payment of the overdue fine.
If borrowed materials are not returned on time, if a book is lost or library materials are damaged, if fees are not paid, or if the user engages in an argument with library staff, the user’s borrowing privileges will be temporarily suspended. Once these issues are resolved, the user will regain their borrowing privileges.
Library Resources That Cannot Be Borrowed:
Reference Materials (Abstracts, Indexes, Handbooks, Dictionaries, Encyclopedias, etc.)*
Theses
Periodicals
Atlases and Maps
Items identified by departments as out of stock or reserved
Rare Books
(*) Dictionaries from the Reference Collection may be borrowed for up to three hours. This period may not exceed three hours and may be extended only once.
Book Reservation Process:
A user may reserve any item currently checked out by another user through the library’s website.
The availability of a reserved item depends on the return date of the user who currently has it checked out. The library does not guarantee that reserved materials will be returned on time; however, when the reserved book is returned to the library, the user will receive an email notification to pick it up.
Reserved materials must be picked up from the circulation desk within 3 days. Materials not picked up within this time frame will be returned to the shelf.
Overdue Fines:
Overdue fines are applied to materials not returned to the library. (*)
Click here for information on paying overdue fines.
New books will not be issued to readers who have overdue books or who have outstanding fines from previous periods.
Overdue fines cannot be waived. Library staff at the circulation desk have no authority to waive or defer overdue fines.
A reader who has incurred fines five times will be warned by the library. In the event of a recurrence, the reader will not be issued new books until the start of the next period.
Items not returned within two months of the due date and found to be damaged to the extent that they cannot be used upon return will be processed as lost.
For members who have materials on their account and/or outstanding overdue fines from previous periods, discharge forms will not be signed until they return the materials on their account and/or pay their outstanding fines.
(*) For renewals made through our library’s website, the final due date displayed in the system is considered valid. All members can view the final due dates for all books registered under their name and renew them through our website.
LOST MATERIALS
Penalty for Lost Materials:
If a library resource borrowed by a member is lost or damaged to the point of being unusable, the member is required to provide an identical copy of the resource. If this is not possible because the resource is out of print, the member is obligated to obtain the resource recommended by the Department Director. If the member is unable to provide a replacement, a loss fee equal to the current replacement cost (the book’s price is not accepted as payment) will be charged for each resource—Turkish and foreign-language resources are assessed separately—to the member who lost or damaged the resource. For overdue materials, a daily late fee will be charged separately to the member. A loss fee of 40 TL will be charged for Turkish books and 70 TL for foreign-language books.
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Fines:
Fines for information resources received through Interlibrary Loan (ILL) are charged at double the rate of fines for resources in our library’s collection.
